WASHINGTON — Coin laundries may see more customers in 2009, as factory shipments of major appliances continued their two-year-long downward trend in November last year, according to the latest monthly data from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM).
Vendors shipped 4.5 million units that month, representing an 8.8% decline from last year. Home laundry was the strongest performer, but still down 2.5% to 1.1 million units as washer shipments decreased 2.7% and dryer shipments went down 2.3%.
Shipments for the AHAM 6, a core composite category comprised of washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, ranges and ovens, fell 8.3% to 2.9 million units. Total year-to-date shipments of all major appliances were similarly down 8.7% to 62.8 million units.
